Author Salman Rushdie was attacked on the lecture stage in New York.
New York police have identified the suspect in the attack and stabbing of Salman Rushdie, the writer whose writing drew death threats from Iran in the 1980s, in the neck on Friday.
His agent, Andrew Wylie, told The New York Times that Rushdie was on a ventilator on Friday evening and could not speak.
“Salman will likely lose an eye; a nerve in his arm was severed, and his liver was stabbed and damaged,” Wylie told the Times.
“The news is not good.”
CNN reported that the suspect in the attack is Hadi Matar, 24, from Fairview, New Jersey.
The attacker was detained by a government trooper at the event, police said.
Authorities said the suspect stabbed Rushdie, 75, at least once in the neck and at least once in the abdomen.
Rushdie is undergoing surgery, state police said.
An Associated Press reporter witnessed a man confront Rushdie on stage at the Chautauqua Institution and begin punching or punching him 10 to 15 times as he was being introduced.
New York Governor Cathy Hoechl later said he was alive and “taking care of his needs”.
Dr Martin Haskell, a physician who rushed to help, described Rushdie’s injuries as “serious but recoverable.”
Event moderator Henry Reese, the co-founder of an organization that provides housing for writers facing persecution, was also attacked and suffered a minor head injury, police said.
who attacked Salman Rushdie?
Rabbi Charles Savenor was among about 2,500 people in the audience.
Amid gasps, spectators were ushered out of the outdoor amphitheatre.
The attacker ran onto the platform “and started hitting Mr Rushdie”.
“At first, you’re like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then it was pretty clear within seconds that he was being beaten,” Savenor said.
He said the attack lasted about 20 seconds.
Another bystander, Kathleen Jones, said the attacker was dressed in black, with a black mask.
where is Salman Rushdie now
“We thought maybe it was part of a stunt to show that there was still a lot of controversy about this author. But it became clear within seconds” that this was not the case, he said.
Another witness told CNN there were no security searches or metal detectors at the event.
The assailant “walked fast” down an aisle and jumped onto the stage, approached the writer, and “stabbed repeatedly with his hand,” the witness said.
After the attack, some longtime visitors to the centre questioned why the event was not heavily guarded given decades of threats against Rushdie and a bounty on his head in the Muslim world. Whoever kills him.
A bloodied Rushdie was quickly surrounded by a small group of people who held up his legs, presumably to send more blood to his chest.
Salman Rushdie condition
In a statement, the nonprofit education centre and summer resort said it was “coordinating with law enforcement and emergency officials on the public response following today’s attack by Salman Rushdie on stage at the Chautauqua Amphitheater”.
Writers like Stephen King and JK Rowling took to Twitter to wish Rushdie the best.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted that he was “horrified” that Rushdie had been stabbed “using the right we must never stop defending”.
Rushdie has been a prominent spokesperson for free speech and liberal causes.
He is the former president of PEN America, who said he was “shocked and horrified” by the attack.
“We can think of no comparable incident of a public violent attack on a literary author on American soil,” CEO Suzanne Nossel said in a statement.
is Salman Rushdie still in hiding
“Salman Rushdie has been targeted for decades for his words but he never relented or flinched,” he added.
Rushdie’s 1988 novel The Satanic Verses was viewed as blasphemous by many Muslims, who saw the character as an insult to the Prophet of Islam, among other objections.
Throughout the Muslim world, often violent protests erupted against Rushdie, who was born into a Muslim family in India.
At least 45 people were killed in riots over the book, including 12 in Rushdie’s hometown of Mumbai.
In 1991, a Japanese translator of the book was stabbed to death and an Italian translator survived the stabbing.
In 1993, the book’s Norwegian publisher was shot three times and survived.
The novel was banned in Iran, where the late leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, or edict, in 1989 calling for Rushdie’s death.
Khomeini died in the same year.
Iran’s current supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has never issued a fatwa rescinding his order, although Iran has not paid attention to the author in recent years.
Iran’s mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday’s attack.
A reward of more than $3 million ($4.22 million) has also been offered for anyone who killed Rushdie.
Death threats and a bounty forced Rushdie into hiding under the British government’s protection program, which included a 24-hour armed guard.
Russia hdie nine years old Nahai emerged after the purge and cautiously began making more public appearances, maintaining his outspoken criticism of religious extremism overall.
He has said that he is proud of his fight for freedom of speech, saying in a 2012 speech in New York that terrorism is the art of fear.
“The only way to defeat it is to decide not to be afraid,” he said.
Iran’s government has long distanced itself from Khomeini’s edict, but anti-Rushdi sentiments persist.
The Index on Censorship, an organization that promotes freedom of expression, said the money had recently been raised in 2016 to increase the reward for his murder, stressing that his death was a fatwa. Still standing.
In 2012, Rushdie published a memoir about the fatwa called Joseph Anton. The title comes from a pseudonym Rushdie used while in hiding.
Rushdie came to prominence with his 1981 Booker Prize-winning novel Midnight’s Children, but his name became world famous after The Satanic Verses.
The Chautauqua Institute, located in a rural corner of New York about 120 kilometres southwest of Buffalo, has served as a place of reflection and spiritual guidance for more than a century.
Visitors do not go through metal detectors or check bags. Most people leave the doors of their centuries-old cottages open at night.
Police said a state trooper was assigned to Rushdie’s lecture.
The Chautauqua Center is known for its summertime lecture series, where Rushdie has spoken before. Speakers address a different topic each week.
Rushdie and moderator Henry Rees were scheduled to discuss “America as a refuge for writers and other artists in exile and as a home for freedom of creative expression.”
