Here are 10 ways to get Google to list your site (which actually works).

If Google does not index your site, you are highly invisible. You will not appear for any search queries, and you will not receive any organic traffic. Call zero
Given that you are here, I guess this is not news to you. So let’s get down to business.

This article teaches you how to solve any of these three problems:

Your entire website is not indexed.
Some of your pages are indexed, but others are not.
Your newly published web pages are not being accounted for so quickly.
But first, let’s make sure we’re on the same page and fully understand this indexing.

What is crawling and indexing?
Google crawls the web to discover new web pages, and then adds them to its index. They do this using a web spider called Google Bot.

Confused? Let’s explain some key terms.

Crawling: The process of following hyperlinks on the web to discover new content.
Indexing: The process of storing each web page in a large database.
Web Spider: A piece of software designed to scale the crawling process.
Google bot: Google’s web spider.

When you do some Google, you ask Google to return all relevant pages from their index. Because there are often millions of pages that fit the bill, Google’s ranking algorithm does its best to sort the pages so that you see the best and most relevant results first.

The important point I am making here is that indexing and ranking are two different things.

The indexing is appearing for the race. Rating is winning.

You can’t win in the first place without showing up for the race.

How to check if you are indexed in Google.
Go to Google, then search site: yourwebsite.com.

This number shows approximately how many pages Google has indexed.

If you want to check the index status of a specific URL, use the same site: yourwebsite.com/web-page-slug operator.

If the page is not indexed, no results will be shown.

Now, it is worth noting that if you are a user of Google Search Console, you can use the coverage report to get a more accurate insight into the index status of your website. Just go:

Google Search Console> Index> Coverage

See the number of valid pages (with and without alerts).

If the sum of these two numbers is anything other than zero, then Google has indexed at least some pages of your website. If not, you have a serious problem because none of your web pages are indexed.

You can also use the Search Console to check if a specific page has been indexed. To do so, paste the URL into the URL Inspection Tool.

If this page is indexed, it will say “URL is on Google.”

How to index by Google
Did you find that your website or webpage is not indexed by Google? Try it out:

Go to Google Search Console.
Go to the URL Inspection Tool.
Paste the URL you want Google to index in the search bar.
Wait for Google to check the URL.
Click the “Request Indexing” button.
This process is great when you publish a new post or page. You are effectively telling Google that you have added something new to your site and they should take a look at it.

However, requesting indexing is unlikely to solve the basic problems that prevent Google from indexing old pages. If so, follow the checklist below to diagnose the problem and fix it.

Here are some quick links to each one – if you’ve already tried one:

Remove crawl blocks in your robots.txt file.
Remove bully nine index tags.
Add a page to your sitemap.
Remove bullying canonical tags.
Check that the page is not an orphan.
nofollow Fix internal links.
Add “powerful” internal links.
Make sure the page is valuable and unique.
Remove low quality pages (to improve “crawl budget”)
Build high quality backlinks
1) Remove crawl blocks in your robots.txt file.
Is Google not indexing your entire website? This could be due to a crawl block in something called a robots.txt file.

Visit yourdomain.com/robots.txt to investigate this issue.

Find one of these two pieces of code:

They both tell Googlebot
They are not allowed to crawl any page on your site. To fix the problem, remove them. It’s that simple.

If Google is not indexing a single web page, the crawl block in robots.txt may be the culprit. Paste to check if this is the case.
It makes URLs in the URL Inspection Tool in Google Search Console. Click the coverage block to reveal more details, then “Crawl allowed? No: blocked by robots.txt” error.

This indicates that the page is blocked in robots.txt.

If so, double-check your robots.txt file for any “approval” rules related to the page or related subsection.

2) Remove the bully nine index tags.
Google will not index pages if you tell them not to. This is useful for keeping certain web pages private. There are two ways to do this:

Method 1: Meta tag
Pages with one of these meta tags will not be indexed by Google in their section.

This is a meta robot tag, and it tells search engines whether they can index the page.

Side note. The key part is the “noindex” value. If you look at it, the page is set to noindex.
To find all pages with noindex meta tags on your site, run a crawl with Ahrefs’site Audit. Go to Index Ability Report. Search “Noindex Page” alerts.

Click to view all affected pages. Remove the noindex meta tag from any page where it does not belong.

Method 2: X-Robots-Tag
Crawlers also respect the X-Robots-Tag HTTP response header. You can implement this by using server-side scripting languages ​​such as PHP, or in your .htaccess file, or by changing your server configuration.

The URL check tool in Search Console lets you know if this header has prevented Google from crawling a page. Just enter your URL, then search “Indexing allowed? No: ‘X-Robots-Tag’ HTTP header detects ‘noindex’.

If you want to check this issue on your site, run a crawl in Ahrefs’s Site Audit tool, then use the “Robots info in HTTP header” filter in Page Explorer:

Ask your developer to delete the pages you want to index by returning this header.

3) Add a page to your sitemap.
Sitemap tells Google which pages of your site are important and which are not. It can also give you some guidance on how often to crawl.

Google should be able to find pages on your site, regardless of whether they are in your sitemap, but it is still a good idea to include them. However, there is no point in making life difficult for Google.

Use the URL checking tool in the Search Console to check if a page is in the map of your site. If you notice a “URL not on Google” error and a “Sitemap: N / A”, it is not in your sitemap or index.

Not using Search Console? Go to the URL of your sitemap; usually yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml— and search the page.

Or, if you want to find all pages that are crawlable and indexable that are not in your sitemap, run a crawl in the site audit of the characters. Go to Page Explorer and apply these filters:

Sitemap is not indexable.

These pages should be in the map of your site, so include them. Once completed, tell Google that you have updated your sitemap by pinging this URL:

http://www.google.com/ping?sitemap=http://yourwebsite.com/sitemap_url.xml

Replace this last part with the URL of your sitemap. Then you should see something like this:

This should speed up Google’s indexing of the page.

4) Remove bullying canonical tags.
A canonical tag tells Google which is the preferred version of the page. It looks something like this:

Most pages either don’t have a canonical tag, or a self-referencing canonical tag. This tells Google that the page itself is the preferred and probably the only version. In other words, you want the page to be indexed.

But if your page has a rogue canonical tag, it is telling Google about a preferred version of the page that doesn’t exist. In that case, your page will not be indexed.

To check Canonical, use Google’s URL Inspection Tool. If the canonical points to another page, you will see a “replacement page with canonical tag” warning.

If it shouldn’t be there, and you want to index the page, remove the canonical tag.

Important
Canonical tags are not always bad. Most pages with these tags will have these tags for a reason. If you see that your page has a canonical set, then the canonical page chiDo it If this is indeed the preferred version of the page, and the page in question does not even need to be indexed, then the canonical tag should be retained.

If you want a quick way to find bullying canonical tags all over your site, crawl through the competitors’ site audit tool. Go to Page Explorer. Use these settings:

It searches for pages in your sitemap that contain non-referral canonical tags. Since you almost certainly want to index pages in your sitemap, you should investigate further if it f.
ilter returns any result.

It is highly likely that these pages contain either invalid canonicals or should not appear earlier in your sitemap.

5) Check that the page is not orphaned.
Orphan pages are those that have no internal links.

Because Google crawls the web and discovers new content, it is unable to find orphaned pages through this process. Website visitors will not be able to find them either.

To test orphan pages, crawl your site with a site audit of the characters. Next, check the links report for “Orphan Page (no incoming internal links)” errors:

It shows all the pages that are indexable and present in the map of your site, but there are no internal links pointing to them.

Important
This process only works when two things are true:

All the pages you want to index are in the maps of your site.
When setting up the project in Ahrefs’ Site Audit you marked the box to use as a starting point for crawling pages in your sitemaps.

Download the full list of pages on your site (via your CMS)
Crawl your website (using tools like Ahrefs’site Audit)
Refer to two lists of URLs.
URLs not found during crawl are orphan pages.

You can fix orphan pages in one of two ways:

If the page is unimportant, delete it and remove it from your sitemap.
If the page is important, add it to the internal link structure of your website.
6) Fix nofollow internal links.
Nofollow links are links with the rel = “nofollow” tag. They prevent the migration of PageRank to the destination URL. Google also does not crawl nofollow links.

What Google says about this issue:

Basically, the use of nofollow causes us to exclude targeted links from our overall web graph. However, targeted pages may still appear in our index if other sites link to them without using nofollow, or if URLs are submitted to Google in the sitemap.

In short, you should make sure that all internal links to indexable pages are followed.

To do this, use Ahrefs’s Site Audit tool to crawl your site. Check the links report for indexable pages, which has an error “There are no internal links coming to the page only”:

Remove the nofollow tag from these internal links, assuming you want Google to index the page. If not, either delete the page or nondex it.

7) Add “powerful” internal links.
Google crawls your website to discover new content. If you fail to link internally to the page under discussion, they may not be able to find it.

An easy solution to this problem is to add some internal links to the page. You can do this from another web page that Google can crawl and index. However, if you want Google to index the page as soon as possible, it makes sense to do so with one of your more “powerful” pages.

Why? Because it is possible that Google will crawl such pages faster than less important pages.

To do so, go to Character Site Explorer, enter your domain, then take a look through the links report.

Scheme this list and find related pages from which to add internal links to the page under discussion.

The next time they crawl the page, Google will look at the link and follow it.

Pro Tip
Paste the page from which you have added an internal link to Google’s URL Inspection Tool. Click the “Request Indexing” button to tell Google. This can speed up the process of discovering their internal link and, consequently, the page you want to index.

8) Make sure the page is valuable and unique.
Google’s low quality pages Not likely to index because they don’t matter to their customers. Here’s what Google’s John Mرller said about indexing in 2018:

This means that if you want Google to index your website or webpage, it needs to be “awesome and inspiring”.

If you have ruled out technical issues for lack of indexing, then the lack of value may be to blame. Therefore, it is worth reviewing the page and asking yourself: Is this page really valuable? Will the user get value in this page if they click on it from search results?

If none of these questions are answered, then you need to improve your content.

You may find more potentially low quality pages that are not indexed using the competitor’s site audit tool and URL profiler. To do this, go to Page Explorer in Audi’s Audi site.

Do a site audit of low quality pages.

This will return the “thin” pages that are indexable and currently have no organic traffic. In other words, there’s a good chance they’re out of order.

Export the report, then paste all the URLs into the URL profiler and run Google Indexing Check.

Important
It is recommended to use a proxy if you are doing this for multiple pages (ie over 100). Otherwise, you run the risk of having your IP blocked by Google. If you can’t, the second option is to search Google for a “free bulk google indexation checker”. Some of these tools are around, but most of them are limited to <25 pages at a time.

Check any unlisted pages for quality issues. Make improvements where necessary, then request a reset in the Google Search Console.

You should also aim to resolve issues with duplicate content. Not likely to index Google duplicate or near duplicate pages. Use duplicate content reports in site audits to investigate these issues.

9) Remove low quality pages (to improve “crawl budget”)
Having too many low quality pages on your website only serves to reduce the crawl budget.

What Google says on this issue:

Disposing of server resources on [low-value-add pages] will eliminate crawl activity from pages that actually have value, which can lead to significant delays in finding the best content on the site. ۔

Think of it as a teacher’s classification, one of which is yours. If they have ten subjects for grades, they will come to you very soon. If they have sleep, it will take them a little longer. If they have thousands, their workload is too high, and they can never rate your article.

Google states that “crawl budget [2] is not something that most publishers need to worry about,” and that “if a site has fewer than a few thousand URLs, most Time will tell.

However, removing low quality pages from your website is never a bad thing. This can only have a positive effect on the crawl budget.

10) Build high quality backlinks
Backlinks tell Google that a web page is important. After all, if someone is connecting with it, it must have some value. These are the pages that Google wants to index.

For complete transparency, Google not only indexes web pages with backlinks. There are many (billions) indexed pages that have no backlinks. However, since Google considers pages with high quality links to be more important, they are more likely to crawl and re-crawl – such pages crawl faster than those pages. This leads to faster indexing.

There are only two possible reasons why Google is not indexing your website or webpage:

Technical issues are preventing them from doing so.
They find your site or page low quality and useless for their users.
It is quite possible that both of these issues exist. However, I would say that technical issues are much more common. Technical issues can also lead to spontaneous generation of indexable low quality content (e.g., issues with aspect navigation). This is not good.

Still, running the checklist above should solve the problem of indexing nine times out of ten.

Just remember that indexing; rating. SEO is still important if you want to rank for any valuable search queries and attract a steady stream of organic traffic.
