COMMERCE, CA — Undefeated UFC strawweight Piera Rodriguez (8-0) will return to the Octagon in October, teaming up with Sam “Sampage” Hughes.

For Rodriguez, an LFA

student who was home for Friday’s LFA 137 in Commerce, CA, the fight will be her sophomore outing in the UFC. Life hasn’t changed much for Rodriguez since making his promotional debut earlier this year, but there have been some ups and downs, he told cageside press on Friday.

“Let’s just say it’s the same schedule every day of my life, training, training, training,” said Rodriguez, who announced his arrival to the UFC by defeating Kay Hansen at UFC 273 in April. “But now things have become a little easier in my life, since I moved here to America, everything is a little more set up. I’m very grateful to have breaks between training sessions and a little extra rest. Live, because I didn’t have it before. Life is the same, I’m the same person, but now things are a little easier and more comfortable—but with the same hard work and schedule.

Looking ahead to his October 15 fight with Hughes, another LFA veteran, Rodriguez opined, “I think it’s going to be a tough fight and a good feeling. Because now — I’ve got the first fight.” The opportunity to do the fight [against Henson], I was really nervous. Now I’m not so nervous about it, I just want to go, go, go. It’s going to be a different fight, that’s for sure. It will be a very interesting fight.

After making it to the big show, Rodriguez is now serving as a mentor to some of the other fighters at her gym. Just like Rodriguez himself looked up to his more experienced teammates before his UFC debut.

“It’s great, because I think we should help each other. It doesn’t matter where you are in life, if you get a chance, help someone,” Rodriguez said on that front. but said “If they have the talent and they’re determined and they want to fight and they want to put the effort into it, why not? Go help them. That’s what I’m trying to do now with Jacqueline [Cavalcanti] and all these female fighters. Doing what I see, who are really trying. If they just want pictures and stuff, it’s not the same. But when you see them really struggle and work hard every day. , with discipline, of course you want to help them.”
